Stare into the horrible eyes of these Rocket League Stay Puft wheels | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

I don't usually use licensed parts on my Rocket League cars, because they're the videogame equivalent of shirts purchased at Disneyland or given away at a convention, and I like to believe that I'm more fashionable than that. The creepiness of these Ghostbusters wheels might make me reconsider, though. Stare at them for a few seconds, because you've got to really steep in the chubby, toothless smile of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man before you feel what I'm feeling. Unsettling, aren't they? Here's a closer look:

Bloodlines 2 senior narrative designer Cara Ellison has left the project | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

In August, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 developer Hardsuit Labs announced that it had parted ways with both lead writer Brian Mitsoda and creative director Ka´ai Cluney. Reasons for their release weren't given, but Mitsoda suggested that it wasn't a happy split, saying that he was unaware of any problems, and that his firing came as a complete surprise.Today, publisher Paradox Interactive confirmed that senior narrative designer Cara Ellison has also left the project, and is no longer with developer Hardsuit Labs. Rumors about Ellison's departure began to swirl after fans noticed that she'd removed references to the project from her Twitter profile; Armello developer League of Geeks also recently announced that Ellison had joined it as senior narrative designer."We can confirm that Cara Ellison has decided to leave Hardsuit Labs and is no longer working on Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2," a Paradox spokesperson said. "Cara brought fresh ideas to the project and many of her contributions will be present in the game launching next year. We thank her for her work on Bloodlines 2 and wish her the best in all of her future endeavors."It's possible that the move reflects the natural evolution of Bloodlines 2 development—that the narrative design is finished and so Ellison's work was effectively done. But in August, Bloodlines was delayed into 2021, suggesting that work was definitely not nearing completion, and it's not hard to see the removal of Mitsoda and Cluney a week later as a sign of deeper trouble. The statement that "many of her contributions will be present in the game" is also interesting: I would expect that as senior narrative designer, the story it tells would be primarily her responsibility.Paradox declined to comment on when Ellison left the project, or how it will impact the development of Bloodlines 2. I've emailed Ellison for more information, and will update if I receive a reply.

Intel sells off its SSD and memory business to SK Hynix in drawn-out $9bn deal | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Intel has agreed to sell its memory and storage business to SK Hynix for $9bn, or 10.3tr KRW. Intel's memory business includes all of its solid-state drives, NAND flash, and even a fab in northeastern China, which will all be transferred to the South Korean memory giant in stages through to 2025.The deal was announced on Intel's newsroom early this morning for us Brits, and outlines what will be shifting over to the NAND manufacturer over the course of the next few years. Intel's NAND SSD business, including related employees and IP; the NAND fabrication facility in Dalian, China will be the first transferred over, in return for a $7bn payment, expected in 2021 following approval. Following that, IP related to the design and manufacturing of NAND flash wafers, R&D employees and the Dalian fab workforce will be transferred on receipt of the final $2bn in 2025. It sure sounds like the Dalian fab workforce is collateral for the deal.Intel retains the wafer manufacturing capability of the fab until the closing of the deal in 2025. So while SK Hynix will serve up a significant sum, it will not receive the business in whole until 2025. Intel also keeps hold of its Optane business, that which it mostly sold off to US memory manufacturer Micron in 2019.Intel's NAND business in total represented $2.8bn in revenue for Intel, and contributed $600m in operating income over the past six months. SK Hynix is hopeful of at least $1.2bn in revenue yearly from the purchase—once the deal is complete, it's still got some time to go until then. The deal appears to be one by SK Hynix to gain traction against world memory manufacturing leader, Samsung. As such, it feels like this deal plays into Intel's hands a little more than it does the Korean memory manufacturer.SK Hynix is down 1.73% in response to the deal, but is slowly creeping back to its previous share price of 86,000-87,000 KRW."I am proud of the NAND memory business we have built and believe this combination with SK Hynix will grow the memory ecosystem for the benefit of customers, partners and employees," Bob Swan, Intel CEO, says. "For Intel, this transaction will allow us to further prioritize our investments in differentiated technology where we can play a bigger role in the success of our customers and deliver attractive returns to our stockholders.”

Urban Strife sounds like Jagged Alliance 2, but it's infested with zombies | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

You can also watch the trailer on our YouTube channel. MicroProse, originally co-founded by Sid Meier almost 40 years ago, made a surprising return this year. It looks like it's picked up where it left off, publishing games that feel most at home on PC, typically with a tactical or sim bent. The latest is Urban Strife, a mix of turn-based tactics, management and roleplaying during a zombie apocalypse. Check out the trailer above. Developed by White Pond Games, Urban Strife is set after the zombies have wiped out civilisation, but they've yet to finish the job and zombify every single human. That means you've got time to build up your shelter, make deals with a trio of factions, put together a team of gun-toting survivors and generally prepare for the return of the horde of wandering corpses. So many turn-based tactics games get compared to XCOM these days, but Urban Strife's got more in common with the Sir-Tech classic Jagged Alliance 2. Like the tactical merc RPG, Urban Strife boasts a dynamic campaign where you'll have to go out and explore, chatting up NPCs and engaging in a bit of diplomacy in an effort to unite the last specks of humanity. This time, though, the NPCs apparently have their own lives and allegiances, with their morality determined by the faction they've joined. Urban Strife's got a trio of factions: army rebels, a cult of zombie-lovers and a biker gang—standard post-apocalyptic fare—and you'll be able to work with them or, if diplomacy breaks down, add them to the large list of things that you have to shoot. As well as fighting off any factions you've pissed off as you try to expand, you'll naturally encounter some of those moaning, shuffling zombies. The thing is, zombies usually suck in turn-based games. Fighting off hordes of enemies who sluggishly move one by one is a chore, but Urban Strife's reanimated corpses use a horde AI that means they all move in a single turn. Each is still an individual enemy, but when it comes to movement they all act as a single unit. Like Jagged Alliance 2, you'll fight during the day and at night, and sticking to the shadows means you'll be able to sneak around and use melee for silent takedowns, or set up your squad for an ambush. You'll be sneakier at night, but using cover, stealth is still viable when the sun is out. And speaking of lighting things up, you can use fire as a weapon, which will dynamically destroy anything flammable that it encounters. Urban Strife is coming out next year on Steam, but MicroProse says there will be an opportunity to play before that.

Psychonauts 2 features a spinning tunnel of teeth, unfortunately | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

I was looking forward to the launch of Psychnonauts 2 next year. Not anymore! On Twitter, Double Fine shared some concept art from the game's Brain in a Jar world, explaining that it originally had a darker tone before the designers made it the trippy realm we saw back in July's trailer. This led to some people asking about properly creepy worlds, so they're who you've got to blame if you're now scarred. Unfortunately, one of the mental worlds we'll be hopping into belongs to someone obsessed with dentistry, so that means lots of teeth. Everywhere. They erupt out of the ground, which appears to be made of gums; they circle you menacingly in a tunnel that can only be going straight to hell; there's even a bridge made entirely of teeth. It's just awful.

Never worry about USB port connectivity again with this dual connector thumb drive | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

The transition from USB Type-A to USB Type-C has not exactly been an expeditious one, mostly because the market is already flooded with devices built around the former. That's why even the newest cutting edge motherboards typically offer more USB-A ports than USB-C ones. Kingston's new DataTraveler Duo USB flash drive can plug into either one of them. It´s a cleverly designed flash drive with a USB-C connector on one side and a USB-A connector on the other, either of which (or both) can be hidden in the slider-style casing."The addition of the DT Duo adds much needed functionality to the growing number of USB Type-C devices on the market," said Carissa Blegen, flash product manager, Kingston. "The dual interface and unique double slider casing make the drive sturdy and stylish, with no cap to lose."Kingston is offering the DataTraveler Duo in 32GB and 64GB capacities. It is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 drive, which means it adheres to the original USB 3.0 specification, with a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 5Gbps. Navigating the USB standard is a little confusing these days, with the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) relabeling past standards. Here's a breakdown:

Pumpkin Jack and Ghostrunner will launch with ray tracing and Nvidia DLSS support | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Pumpkin Jack and Ghostrunner have both been confirmed today with support for ray-traced reflections and shadows at launch, along with support for Nvidia's supersampling AI tech, DLSS.The announcement of Pumpkin Jack RTX support is likely to get some of you excited, as the 3D platformer has gained momentum leading up to Halloween and ahead of its October 23, 2020 release date. We also now know that the single developer behind the game, Nicolas Meyssonnier, intends to bundle support for ray-traced reflections, shadows, enhanced lighting, and DLSS at launch. You can check out Pumpkin Jack's new RTX on look in the new trailer below.

Explore BioShock's Rapture in this Half-Life: Alyx mod | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

If you fancy wandering around the spooky ruins of BioShock's Rapture in VR and shooting headcrabs, boy have I got the mod for you. Return to Rapture (cheers, UploadVR) is a Half-Life: Alyx mod created by wim.buytaert.1988 that smooshes the two universes together. The Combine has discovered the location of Andrew Ryan's underwater city and want to get their alien hands on his fancy Plasmid tech. As Alyx, you'll need to stop them by getting it first. You won't be able to use Plasmids, but at least you've still got Alyx's handy gravity gloves. There are still plenty of nods to BioShock, though, including working Vita Chambers, audio diaries and vending machines. The latter let you recycle junk you find lying around, turning them into useful items. It uses a mix of Half-Life: Alyx assets and new ones to create something that, while not perfect, certainly evokes Irrational Games' dilapidated dystopia. The only thing that's really off are the signs, some of which are just plain text pasted onto vending machines and Vita Chambers. If you, like me, can't wear a headset for very long without feeling a bit iffy, you'll have an easy time of it in Return to Rapture. It should only take 25 minutes to finish up, so it's a whirlwind tour rather than an extended stay. Judging by the state of the city, that's probably for the best.

LG's finally rolling out the world's first rollable OLED TV. For $87,000 | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

I don´t know about you, but I feel the very real, very intense interior design burden that walls have on my television placement. Thankfully, for the lucky few of us who currently live in Korea and fall within an excruciatingly high income bracket, LG has a solution that "liberates users from the limitations of the wall"(via The Verge).LG´s signature OLED RX is the world-first rollable TV—a 65 inch, 4K flexible panel that's able to simply disappear into its compact unit when not in use. It´s a smart TV (as is becoming the standard now), with built in Alexa and Google assistant among other capabilities, and plenty of connectivity options. If you hadn´t guessed from the name, the panel itself utilises OLED self-lighting pixel technology to get that crisp imaging, and individual dimming control for those perfect blacks. It also has three viewing formats to choose from: Full View, Line View and Zero View—the pixel ratios for which are not disclosed.Full View is when the OLED panel is rolled out to its full 65-inch scale, while Line View gives you a little peek-a-boo glimpse at a portion of the screen, peering out from its chonk stand. That will give you access to some of the TV apps designed for the cut-down view, such as weather, time, and music. Finally, Zero View gets rid of the display completely while retaining control over music apps.LG also boasts an ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) feature, and less than 1ms response time. However, there's a distinct lack of G-Sync support here that many of LG's other OLED TVs now boast—such as the excellent LG OLED48CX—and it doesn´t offer FreeSync either, so gaming may not be it´s most optimal use.But we´ll just have to see about that if LG ever trusts us with a review unit…The prototype was first showcased at the 2018 CES, and the final product was supposed to ship the next year. Unfortunately, that day never came. Now though, with added 100-watt Dolby Atmos 5.1 surround sound, the consumer version is finally out in the wild.

AMD's latest GPU driver arrives just in time for Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Today marks the arrival of Doom Eternal's first DLC, part one of the two-part 'The Ancient Gods' campaign, which you can play whether you own the main game or not (it's a standalone expansion). And right on cue, AMD is pushing out an updated graphics drive that will optimize your Radeon hardware for the expansion, as well as a few other games. In addition to The Ancient Gods, AMD's new Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.10.1 driver (try saying that even just two times fast) is optimized for Watch Dogs: Legion (due out October 29), the recently delayed (again) Dirt 5 in Early Access (due out November 6), and the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands pre-expansion patch. As is often the case, AMD shoehorned a handful of bug fixes with its latest driver release. They include the following:

Destiny 2 Beyond Light story trailer shows old foes with new powers | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

The Darkness is (finally) almost here. With its arrival, the Guardians will weaponise a new form of energy: Stasis, to fight back. But other species can wield that power too. In the latest story trailer for Destiny 2—Beyond Light we see the Fallen using Stasis to try and rise up once again. The poor fools. There's a note of heresy in the speeches at the start of the video. The Fallen tend to worship their floating orb machines as facsimiles for The Traveler, the god-like resurrection 'Great Machine' that once favoured them but now coddles the Guardians on Earth. However, led by Eramis (Kell of Darkness, to her friends) a faction of the remaining Fallen are turning away from that slavish mindset to chart a new Stasis-empowered future for their race of sad four-armed failures. Will they earn their freedom and dignity? Absolutely not. Because the Guardians are going to shoot them a lot with the gorgeous new exotic weapons coming in the Beyond Light expansion. Beyond Light is due November 10, and it needs to be, as promised, a massive reset for Destiny 2. I'm disappointed by the lack of new enemies in this video but Stasis is a major systemic shift that provided a major shakeup for all classes.

The Sims 4 Snowy Escape expansion will take you skiing and rock-climbing next month | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

The Sims 4 Snowy Escape has been announced as the next expansion coming to the long-running series. Coming in November, it'll whisk you off to a new world inspired by Japan where your Sims will be able to ski and go rock-climbing at picturesque Mt. Komorebi. This new expansion is coming pretty quickly on the heels of The Sims 4: Star Wars game pack, which I enjoyed (I got to hug Kylo Ren) but which made a lot of Sims 4 players unhappy. Many Sims fans were hoping for a more grounded expansion, and are still waiting for new skin tones (which are due in December) and other fixes and improvements that don't involve lightsabers and astromech droids. Snowy Escape looks like a more traditional expansion, so we'll see if it goes over better with diehard Sims 4 players."The Japanese-inspired world offers a variety of activities for Sims to enjoy, from unwinding in the mountain´s onsen bathhouse, meditating on mindful walks or testing their limits with exciting, and sometimes dangerous sports activities like skiing, snowboarding and rock climbing," says EA.There's also an interesting tweak to the Lifestyle traits system in the Sims 4, as well as the addition of a system called Sentiments. Rather then determining how your Sims will react to something based on the attributes you've given them, it sounds like the things your Sims do will shape their personality and give them new traits as a result."For the first time, up to 16 Lifestyles will manifest in response to a Sim´s actions and habits, changing their behaviors significantly more than Create a Sim traits as they reflect a Sim´s lived experiences," says EA. "Sentiments represent how two Sims can feel differently about the outcome of a shared experience and have a lasting impact on Sims´ relationships to each other, affecting their social interactions."Sounds interesting! Hopefully we'll have more information about those systems soon.

Phasmophobia updates will make ghosts smarter and less predictable | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Phasmophobia is the best ghost game ever made, according to Rich Stanton, and with the spooky season upon us, it's managed to seduce a lot of would-be ghost hunters and become a Steam top seller. It's still in Early Access, though, which means Kinetic Games still has time to jam in some more horror. A recent post to the Phasmophobia subreddit outlined some of the latest changes to the game, as well as pointing interested players towards a public Trello board where in-progress updates are logged. A quick skim through the various lists of WIP, to-do, and nice-to-have features shows that there's a lot going on with this game—especially when you factor in that developer Kinetic Games is reportedly a one-person operation.Simultaneously the most promising and most alarming trend that emerges from this glimpse into the game's future is that the ghosts look to be getting smarter. Like an English teacher picking apart your grammar, ghosts are going to start refusing to talk to you via the Spirit Box unless you pose them a direct question—just chattering away at them will no longer trigger a response. You can see the impact by firing up the beta branch, but you'll need to have voice recognition on first. If that makes the ghosts sound charmingly fussy rather than frightening, don't fret: there are more behavioural changes on the horizon, and they sound a lot more worrying. As things currently stand, ghosts will generally stick close to the room they have chosen to be their base of operations. Combined with the powerful thermometer tool that allows you to easily identify the ghost's favourite hangout, this knowledge is pretty powerful for tipping the odds in your investigative team's favour. Listed among the in-progress updates on Trello, however, is a feature that will increase the ghost's chances of wandering into a different room, as well as giving them a preference for returning to the last location where they spotted a player—a truly terrifying prospect, as it would make caching equipment in nearby 'safe' rooms much less, well, safe. There's even a plan (currently just in the ideas phase, mercifully) to nerf that helpful thermometer. Scary times indeed. As ever with Early Access, the direction the game is taking is subject to change, and we can't really know at this point what Phasmophobia will look like in its finished version. But with these planned updates seemingly geared towards taking even experienced players out of their comfort zone and forcing them to think on their feet to outwit the ghosts, there's sure to be a lot more spooks in store. For Phasmophobia, the night is still very young. If you fancy testing your own ghost hunting skills against Phasmophobia's array of spirits, shades, wraiths, and more, you can pick up the Early Access version on Steam for £11/$14.

Red Dead Online's Halloween event has shades of Undead Nightmare | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Red Dead Redemption 2's been out for a good long while now, but there's still no hint of a sequel to the Undead Nightmare, the first game's fantastical standalone expansion. Sadly, we'll have to go another Halloween without zombies roaming around, but in this year's Halloween event fans of Undead Nightmare's zombie outbreak storyline might find a little something to scratch their itch. The new game mode Dead of Night has no grand overarching plot, but does represent the long-awaited return of zombies to Red Dead, this time as part of a PvP challenge. The mode will see four teams compete to score points by putting down a rival gang, The Dead, but if you think this is going to be some sort of co-operative apocalyptic utopia, think again: you'll also be able to add to your team's score by causing the demise of your human opposition. Good news if 'feeding a cowboy to a zombie' was on your bucket list, I guess. Also in celebration of spooky season, two new legendary panthers have been added to the game: the Nightwalker Panther of Bolger Glade, and the Ghost Panther of Bluewater Marsh. Like many people who grew up in rural Britain, I was raised on a steady diet of frankly surreal rumours that there was a panther roaming free somewhere in the local woods, which has given me a bit of an irrational fear of encountering one if I'm honest. I can't decide whether that means I'm going to give these two a miss or finally exorcise some childhood demons, but suffice to say my hair's already standing on end just at the thought. If you do manage to bag either of these elusive creatures, you can take their pelts to Gus's Store to unlock corresponding new garment sets. While we're on the subject of animals, the update will also give naturalists the opportunity to transform themselves into an opossum, bizarrely enough. This arcane metamorphosis will be achieved by combining the knowledge gleaned from a pamphlet entitled Opossum Vitalism Studied with the practical application of harvested Harrietum Officinalis flowers. Alright, it's not quite as cool as being a cowboy werewolf, but I've heard opossums are surprisingly vicious for something so cute-looking, so it might be worth a try; plus I'm assured the effects are only temporary.Today also saw the launch of the game's Halloween pass, which costs 15 gold bars. While you won't need the pass in order to play Dead of Night mode, hunt the new legendary animals, or turn yourself into the feared were-'possum, it does confer other benefits: including giving a suitably spooky makeover to the Moonshine Bar, unlocking Halloween-themed personal effects, and adding spectral weapons, amongst other features. The pass features 20 levels to progress through and will be available until November 16. Rockstar have confirmed that the rewards you gain will remain your property after that point, but it seems that most of the game-play features—both from the pass and the update—will be time-limited.Four weeks of Halloween are barely enough as it is—but on the plus side, getting started in the next seven days will confer triple payouts and bonus items on players participating in Dead of Night mode, so there's all the more reason to get stuck in now in order to see everything Red Dead Online has lined up for Halloween.

Cliff Bleszinski says he's feeling the urge to make 'a little game' | PC Gamer

3 day(s) ago in category Gaming

In November 2018, famed designer Cliff Bleszinski swore off making games forever: In response to a LawBreakers player who was unhappy about not receiving a refund after Bleszinski's studio, Boss Key Productions, went out of business, he said, "This kinda shit is another reason I am NEVER making another game."But as just about anyone who's sworn an oath after a bad day can tell you, these pledges aren't always quite as iron-clad as they're made out to be. Bleszinski said in August 2019 that maybe he might think about possibly one day giving thought to conceptualizing another game (but not a battle royale!) and in a recent Facebook post reflecting on the fate of the studio, he once again teased the possibility of a return.

Microsoft Flight Simulator modders are replacing Bing with Google Maps data | PC Gamer

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an incredible accomplishment, simulating the entire planet in remarkable detail and modeling hundreds of cities around the world. There are a few glitches in the matrix: The occasional bizarre obelisk in Australia, a reality-warping chasm in Brazil, and some towering stone spikes in Japan, for example. And sometimes cities, buildings, and landmarks in Microsoft Flight Simulator just don't look so great when you're flying over them. Buckingham Palace, for instance, looks like a standard office building. Stonehenge looks like someone painted it flat on the grass. Modders have naturally been busy since the sim's launch adding improved scenery to the sim.And more and more, modders are taking Microsoft Flight Simulator's data, which uses information from Bing Maps and Microsoft's Azure AI, and replacing it with data from Google Maps.

Fallout 76 celebrates global nuclear annihilation with a free week for everyone | PC Gamer

October 23, 2077, in Fallout lore, is the day that China brought the decade-long Sino-American War to a head by unleashing a nuclear strike against the US. That of course resulted in a retaliatory strike against China by the US, and a couple of hours later the world was a fried onion. To celebrate the big day, Bethesda is making the multiplayer post-nuclear playground Fallout 76 free to play until October 26.The free-play period includes full access to the base game, as well as the Wastelanders and Nuclear Winter updates. Bethesda will also run a trio of in-game events between October 22-26, with double S.C.O.R.E. and double XP, and 25 percent off Legendary weapons and armor from Purveyor Murmrgh at the Rusty Pick.A limited preview of Fallout 1st, the subscription-based premium membership that launched in 2019, will also be offered during the free period. To check it out, head to the in-game store and snag the free "Fallout 1st Limited Preview" item, which will grant access to the Scrapbox (which must be claimed separately through the Fallout 1st section of the Atomic Shop) and Survival Tent, along with a couple of other in-game freebies that normally go to subscribers. Both will be available until the end of the free week on October 26; once it's over, anything in your Scrapbox will still be there, but you won't be able to add anything else.As usual with these things, any progress you earn during the free period, and any purchases you make from the in-game Atomic Shop, will carry over if you spring for the full game—which, is also on sale on Steam for $16/£14/€16. Atoms, the premium currency in Fallout 76, are also on sale for the first time ever, for a discount of 20-35 percent off the base price. Full details are up at bethesda.net.

Competitive lying is a thing now. Last night, Faze Clan put on an Among Us invitational tournament with a bunch of streamers, and despite some light technical jankiness (remotely flipping between Twitch streams is a tough thing to make seamless), it worked pretty well. Among Us doesn't exactly lend itself to esports in the way games like CS:GO and League of Legends do. There's strategy to it, and there are clever plays, but it's impossible to control who the imposters are. A major part of the game is random, then, and has to be random for it to work. If you haven't played Among Us, here's why that's the case: In each round, two players are randomly selected to be imposters, while the other players are all regular crewmates. The imposters must attempt to kill as many crewmates as they can without being found out. Meanwhile, each crewmate attempts to complete a checklist of tasks. The imposters win if the number of living crewmates is equal to the number of living imposters. The crewmates win if they vote to execute both imposters during emergency meetings (though they might accidentally execute regular crewmates), or if they all complete their tasks.

Last week, Blizzard announced that development of StarCraft 2 is winding down. It wasn't a particularly shocking announcement—StarCraft 2 is 10 years old, after all—but it was very much an end-of-an-era moment for a seminal RTS and esport. In an amusing and almost certainly coincidental bit of timing, a group of former Blizzard developers including a number of StarCraft 2 veterans unveiled a new studio today called Frost Giant Studios, with a website featuring these all-caps words plastered across the top: REAL-TIME STRATEGY RETURNS."Our mission is to build the next great PC real-time strategy game!" the site says. "We've been privileged to work for some of the greatest companies in the industry. Now it's our turn to carry forward the legacy of epic storytelling, innovative co-op gameplay, and celebrated esports that make RTS great."The current team includes:

It's also a videogame strongly reminiscent of PlayStation 2 classic Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, which was famous for a) basically being a 3D take on Ghouls and Ghosts and b) therefore being very hard. As the trailer above will make clear, it's a horror-themed game but it's pretty far from being scary. Instead, you'll romp around as pumpkin-headed Jack, smashing up enemies with combos, evading them with dodges, and solving the occasional puzzle along the way. These puzzles are of the physics-oriented variety, though each level will introduce new problem solving themes. In other words, it's a 3D platformer, and probably a bit more varied than ye olde Maximo after all. If you're keen to give Pumpkin Jack a spin before its October 24 release date, there's a demo available on the game's Steam page.

Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War's open multiplayer beta starts today on PlayStation 4 and October 17 everywhere else, and Treyarch has poked its head out of the bunker to break down what you can expect when you smear on the camo and head back to the '80s. Cold War's beta will feature new maps, like the jungle of compound of Cartel, spread across a variety of modes, including new ones like VIP Escort, Combined Arms: Assault and Fireteam: Dirty Bomb. You'll be able to play on Cartel in different 6v6 and 12v12 modes, which has points of interest that include a handy sniper tower in the middle, surrounded by an open area, a warehouse for close quarters scraps and several opportunities for stealth. In VIP Escort, one team will have to get a VIP to an extraction zone while the other team tries to stop them. Respawns have been disabled, so you'll have to revive your fallen comrades. Combined Arms: Assault joins Combined Arms: Dominations, which was playable during the alpha, in the list of 12v12 modes. It's a race to capture five objectives, one after the other, taking teams further and further behind enemy lines. Finally, there's Fireteam: Dirty Bomb, a surprisingly elaborate race with an extraordinarily grim premise. 40 players, split into ten teams, compete to detonate dirty bombs by fighting over uranium caches. The radiation caused by the bomb's explosion will linger, making part of the map a radioactive hazard and earning the team responsible some points. Players finding themselves in a radioactive area will develop radiation sickness, affecting their perk benefits, slowing them down, reducing health regeneration and finally killing them. Sounds like a fun romp. On top of the new maps and modes, the beta will also be an opportunity to check out other new additions, like the ping system. Cold War's not the first Call of Duty to follow the welcome trend started by Apex Legends—that would be Warzone—but it's the first time the series has used it outside of a battle royale setting. The system lets you warn your team about threats, show them loot and communicate without needing to actually chat.Less relevant to PC players is the expansion of the FOV slider to all platforms, but it's good news if you're planning to play Cold War on consoles. Along with changing the FOV, you'll be able to customise the UI by toggling different elements, like crosshairs, health bars and the compass. While you'll have to wait a bit longer to play on PC, expect to see plenty of footage appearing from the PS4 beta in the meantime. You'll also be able to play a little earlier, on October 15, with a preorder.

In an effort to tailor Windows 10 to your actual interests, Microsoft is toying with the idea of an initial setup screen that lets you select how you plan to use your PC, with several different categories to choose from. One of them is Gaming.

It came out shortly after it was revealed, without any microtransactions or grindy progression systems—none of the trappings of a live service game. And now that it's out, it looks like there are no plans to milk it. Speaking to UploadVR earlier this week, creative director Ian Frazier explained that EA Motive wanted to make a straightforward game where it was complete at launch, rather than stretching it out across updates, seasons or DLC. "Never say never," he said, "but as far as our philosophy goes we're not trying to treat the game as a live service. We don´t want to say, 'It's almost done!' and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days. So we've tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, 'You´ve paid the $40, this is the game and it's entirely self-contained. We're not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition."That it wasn't going to be a live service game was emphasised quite a lot before launch, but given all the different aliens and locations stuffed into the Star Wars universe it's surprising that EA Motive isn't drawing on them for new cosmetics and more maps. It should be a good thing, a game that launches with everything it's ever going to have, so you can just buy it and never have to dip into your bank account again, but on the other hand I just want more stuff. I'm greedy. The unlockable cosmetics are all very plain, and eventually I'm going to start getting bored of the maps—but I guess that's when I just move on. Being finished with a game—what a novel concept!

And more specifically, a denial-of-service vulnerability that will not be fixed until sometime next year.Security researchers at Cisco discovered the security flaw, noting that it can be "triggered by executing the D3DKMTCreateAllocation function with malformed data. This leads to an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in AMD ATIKMDAG.SYS driver."The resulting actions by an attacker could potentially lead to an out-of-bounds read exploit and denial-of-service, which in turns crashes the PC with a BSOD. It can also be triggered by non-privileged (read: guest) accounts.

Larian snuck it into the EULA. Obviously we all read EULAs right to the bottom, so this will exclusively be news to people who haven't played Baldur's Gate 3 yet. Larian added it to the end of the agreement—again, something we've all read if we've played it—along with the threat of forfeiting fame and fortune if we fail. Give it a read:Upon accepting this Pact, you take on an additional quest to submit to Larian one (1) recording of a chant, song, text, poem or interpretive dance performed by you and extolling your interest in the Forgotten Realms.Should you decline to undertake and finish this quest within the first three winters following your acceptance of this Pact, you forfeit subsequent fame, fortune, and/or infamy as a founding member of our Guild of Great Genius. You hereby grant Larian Studios a worldwide, perpetual, and royalty-free license to share such recordings through Larian Studios' social media channels. It's a quest really more suitable to bards, though I guess that is the closest class analogue for someone who writes about videogames. I think I'll take my chances with the forfeit. After screenshot of the EULA was shared on Reddit by ViviFFIX, it was pointed out that this juxtaposition of in-game fiction and legal agreements also crops up in the tabletop game. My D&D 5e rulebook, for instance, includes the disclaimer that "Wizards of the Coast is not responsible for the consequences of any failed saving throws, including but not limited to petrification, poison, death magic, dragon breath, spells, or vorpal sword-related decapitation." There goes my class action lawsuit. Larian slipped a few other things into the EULA, including a stipulation that you don't strike any deals with fey, infernal or eldritch creatures. That's also just good general advice. Baldur's Gate 3 launched in Early Access earlier in the week, and I played through the first act and found that I couldn't stop pushing people off ledges. It's pretty great. If you've started playing, you might want to check out our Baldur's Gate 3 tips and then mosey on over to our Baldur's Gate 3 companion guide.

This is because these chips are designed to plug straight into existing motherboards. Asus has just announced that BIOS updates are now live for its 500 series motherboards, with the updates supporting current generation chips as well as the new Zen 3 processors that are going to be announced later today.

This out of towner joins the likes of Robocop and the Terminator, as well as other guest fighters like Spawn and Joker. Sylvester Stallone unexpectedly reprises his role, lending his voice to the First Blood version of Rambo that, through the magic of time travel and alternate dimensions, finds himself duking it out with undead ninjas and elemental gods. Rambo is part of the upcoming Kombat Pack 2 DLC, which will also net you Mileena and Rain, classic characters making their Mortal Kombat 11 debut. New characters also means new weapons, accessories and outfits to unlock, and as much as I love the game, I'm increasingly convinced that I'm really just playing so I can dress up all my angry warriors. The new pack is coming on November 17, alongside the launch of a new Ultimate edition containing the base game, Aftermath expansion and DLC packs. Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate will be available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as next-gen consoles. The next-gen version will be a free upgrade, with reduced load times, 4K dynamic resolution and "enhanced visuals". There's no word on any enhancements for the PC version.

It's out now. The second season brings with it a quartet of new rounds, including a race through a medieval obstacle course featuring the unfortunately named 'Thicc Bonkus', and another where you'll have to work together to move blocks around to scale a fortress. Everyone's got rounds they love and rounds they loathe—Chris ranked the lot of them—so Season 2 lets you select themed playlists. At the moment, the only options are the original full playlist or a gauntlet playlist, but I expect more will be added in the future. There are new costumes too, naturally, letting you drape dragon skin and wizard robes over yourself, and if you can't make up your mind, the random costume generator will rummage around your wardrobe and pick something. Take a look at the official patch notes:

Built on the Zen 3 architecture, the new Ryzen 5000 series processors may appear similar to their Ryzen 3000 counterparts on the surface, but in reality they hide a streamlined architecture that AMD is confident is ready to meet Intel in gaming.AMD was promising a lot for gamers at this event, and it looks like it may deliver. Dr. Lisa Su has unveiled a brand new flagship chip for our gaming rigs today: the Ryzen 9 5950X. It promises to crush many a Cinebench record, but also use a healthy IPC (instructions per clock) bump to dominate in gaming too. This is thanks to the Zen 3 architecture. It offers higher max boost clocks, an IPC uplift, new 8-core CCX layout, and improved cache topology. That all accounts for 26% performance uplift on average across games at 1080p, AMD says.

                                                                                                                                                                      11

AMD says Zen 3 has a 19 percent IPC boost over Zen 2 | PC Gamer

15 day(s) ago in category Gaming

AMD started off its Zen 3 launch event by promising a 19 percent Instruction Per Clock improvement over Zen 2. That's quite the improvement. Indeed AMD is promising to have the fastest single-threaded performance overall. This coupled with the Ryzen 5000 chips higher frequency means that AMD looks like it's gunning to wrestle the overall performance crown from Intel. This impressive improvement comes from a number of areas, although the benefits of the unified 8-Core Complex (CCX) is certainly key, which leads to reduced latency and better access to the L3 cache. There are also performance improvements from increasing the number of Load and Stores compared to Zen 2. AMD has also added more branch prediction bandwidth to tackle back to back predictions—something it is calling 'zero bubble'. It has also made the Zen 3 floating point and integer execution wider.Dr. Lisa Su went on to point out that 'It's our largest increase generation over generation since we launched the Zen family.' This will have an impact on the performance in serious workloads, but as IPC is so important to gaming, it should also mean that AMD could finally close ground with Intel and potentially overtake it.

                                                                                                                                                                        12

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is 28% faster than Zen 2 in Shadow of the Tomb Raider | PC Gamer

Today, AMD announced that the Ryzen 9 5900X, a brand new Zen 3 CPU, smashed the Cinebench R20 single-threaded run record, reaching a sky-high score of 631, where the Intel Core i9 10900k only spits up 544.The 12-core, 24-thread chip, with boost frequencies of up to 4.8GHz, is looking to be 26% faster than its predecessor in terms of average gaming performance. We´re looking at ridiculous improvements in 1080p performance, with League of Legends up 50% and CS:GO 46% higher.Frame rate averages in Shadow of the Tomb Raider (on the high quality preset) are pushing 181 compared to the 141 that AMD's Zen 2 Ryzen 9 3900X could handle. That´s a 28% increase in performance. This has been yet another incredible leap for AMD, even with what appears to be little to no leap in manufacturing node gains. Of course, these are AMD's own numbers, so we'll be keen to verify them ourselves and see how it all shakes out as soon as we are able.Check out our live report for a beat-by-beat breakdown of every announcement from AMD's event.

There are more than 50 weapons, four flyable helicopters, and character customization options, and it's really quite good: We called it "a fiery test of awareness, speed and accuracy which upholds the series' devotion to teamwork and authenticity" in our 85% review.Abzû is very different: "An expertly directed psychedelic marine tour without a single UI or text prompt telling you where to go or what to do, purely driven by curiosity," we said in an equally positive review in 2016. "It's a short, dense journey filled with intense wonder and inherent beauty, and every inch is worth seeing."One thing they have in common is that they're both free for keeps until October 15, so get 'em while they're hot. After that, two more will take their place: The Chinese Room's narrative oddball Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, which I really want to replay, and the strategy-survival sim Kingdom New Lands. After announcing the first four Ryzen 5000-series CPUs—which could well steal the gaming performance crown from Intel—Dr. Lisa Su unveiled the first 'Big Navi' benchmarks.AMD's CEO held up the first RX 6000-series card on stage, "which we now affectionately call 'Big Navi' thanks to many of you who nicknamed it for us. "It is absolutely gorgeous, and by far the most powerful gaming GPU we have ever built."With a test machine running the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X alongside the RX 6000-series GPU, presumably the top-spec version, we saw an in-engine demo of Borderlands 3 running at just over 60 fps at 4K on Badass quality. We also had a sneak peak at another couple of games running on the same all-AMD platform: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Gears of War 5. Both games where running on Ultra Quality settings and at 4K. CoD is running at almost 90 fps and Gears 5 is over 70 fps.

There's just one thing, only the cheapest of the lot, the Ryzen 5 5600X, includes a CPU cooler, the low-profile Wraith Stealth. It's not that surprising that these chips don't come with coolers. While we were rather smitten with the bundled chip chillers, they were surprisingly capable for effectively free gear, they were also notably absent with two out of three of the Ryzen refresh earlier this year, which saw the release of three chips: the Ryzen 9 3900XT, Ryzen 7 3800XT, and Ryzen 5 3600XT.

There will be plenty of (relative) action ahead of the start of the trial, however, including a "case management conference"—basically a pre-trial hearing intended to help "streamline trial issues"—that will take place on October 19.Interestingly, it hasn't yet been decided whether the trial will be held in person, virtually, or in "some combination thereof," as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. That will be determined closer to the actual trial date. A pretrial conference will be held on April 21, 2021.It will be very interesting to see how this case ultimately works out. The Washington Post recently reported on a congressional investigation that found Apple, along with Amazon, Google, and Facebook, had engaged in "anti-competitive, monopoly-style tactics" on their way to becoming massive corporate behemoths, but in September judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who's presiding over the Epic-Apple dispute, criticized Epic for its tactics leading up to the lawsuit, saying its release of a Fortnite update that enabled users to bypass Apple's payment system was "not honest." Whatever the outcome, it will likely have a significant impact on the future of digital storefronts. Thanks, GamesIndustry.

The update comes alongside an amusing request from Larian to Nvidia: Please send us one of your sweet new cards."Fun story: Because the card was so wildly popular, we couldn´t source any to test with prior to launch," Larian said. "We still don´t have one. At this point, we´re pretty sure you guys made up the RTX 3080. Prove it exists by sending one to us."As for the update itself, it "solves the most frequent crashes and multiplayer issues," but there are still quite a number of other issues remaining, Larian said. "The good news is that the majority of issues reported to us are known, and a large percentage of those already have a fix in the works. Generally, for remaining multiplayer issues, reloading the game and loading the next available save will get you back up and running."That's fine as far as it goes, but it sucks if you've been so absorbed in the game that you've completely forgotten about saving it—which is why Larian also recommended save-scumming while roaming about the Sword Coast. "Save scumming," the process of saving your game just ahead of an action that's dangerous or has a randomized outcome and then reloading repeatedly until you get a result you like, is a practice as old as videogames, and so is the debate about around it: I think most of us have done it at least twice in our lives, but some consider it dishonorable. Larian, however, urged players not to feel bad about it, at least in this instance."If you´re vehemently against save-scumming, do not read the following message. *whispers*: we suggest quicksaving frequently, as we add more autosave points in the game, and to prevent lost time if you experience a problem," Larian wrote. "All you need to do is hit F5. If you´re streaming, just create an overlay that hides when you save. Or pretend you cough. Nobody will notice, really."The next update and patch is expected "soon," and will be bigger than the hotfixes that have rolled out over the past couple of days. In the meantime, here's the full list of fixes in this one:

The Fremen serve as both the Dune series' heart and its narrative backbone. This is their story.

One of these catastrophes stands out clearly as the worst thing the crew ever did on Futurama: They caused the massacre of hundreds of billions of alien infants.

For one, it actually hews closer to the source material than the anime ever did.

A Vice report says Activision dropped a big hammer on cheaters yesterday after the company detected them using a popular cheat.People "familiar with the matter" told the site that one user banned from the game, Twitch streamer Nick Wagner, was shown the door for using EngineOwning, a subscription-based cheat service. It's not confirmed that other cheaters caught up in the banwave were using the same thing, but the EngineOwning website now lists its cheat for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, which also covers Warzone, as "detected," meaning that developer Infinity Ward is able to tell when it's being used and, presumably, do something about it.Complaints about the bans, and a certain amount of glee (which I assume comes from non-cheaters) are now making the rounds on the EngineOwning forums.

23 day(s) ago in category Gaming

Valorant patch 1.09 includes a variety of changes, but Riot knows that much of the talk will be about the adjustments to the one-hit-kill Operator sniper rifle (which stands in for Counter-Strike's AWP). The change log is prefaced with an explanation, as well as a couple of pleas to read it before sending them mail."But before you get all 'look how they massacred my boy' on us," wrote the developer, "let one of our lead designers walk you through our analysis."I'll be rebellious and start with the changes. The Operator is now more expensive, going from $4,500 to $5,000, does less leg damage, and fires slightly slower. Movement is a little slower while scoped, and the gun becomes inaccurate sooner after moving and takes longer to become accurate after stopping. In addition, all guns will be inaccurate for longer after jumping. Now the explanation. The price change was made because Riot noticed some players managing to pick up an Operator and full armor in round three, and then "snowballing that lead into additional Ops throughout the half.""The new price point delays the Operator's appearance and increases the penalty for dying with one in hand," wrote Riot. "We hope to better balance the risk/reward of using this premium weapon."As for the functional changes to the weapon, the idea is to make it harder to re-peek an angle after being pushed off of it."For you Aggressive Operators—dry peeking angles with an Operator is noticeably more effective than we´d like (especially when jump peeking)," said Riot. "Additionally, pushing an Operator off of an angle with utility feels less valuable since the user is able to re-peek and kill their opponent at a reliable rate. This suite of mechanical changes (deadzone, scoped move speed, firing rate, equip time, jump land inaccuracy) targets these issues, increasing counterplay around high-mobility Operator play. The Operator is still quite potent at peeking angles but predictable repeeks should be easier to punish."From the looks of it, the changes have mostly been well received on the Valorant subreddit, though not enough time has passed to know if they've had the desired effect—increasing the risk of picking the Op without pushing it into the margins. Time (and probably data Riot is gathering) will tell. There are other changes in the patch, including another Viper buff, and you can read the full notes here.Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the Operator fires slightly faster now. It fires slightly slower.

It's about the world where you collect cards that have monsters on them because all your school friends do, playing Power Pets between classes. And in that world you're free to alter the cards with stickers, create new ones (if your crayon drawing is good enough), and trade them with your friends, making the game your own.Cardpocalypse launched as an Epic exclusive last year, and will be available from Steam on October 12. On the same day a DLC called Out of Time is being released, a separate campaign about being trapped in a time loop where you relive the same day of school over and over. Truly a nightmare. It comes with new Power Pets cards including a neutral champion called Bloop, and features voice-acting by Liam Cunningham, aka Davos the Onion Knight from Game of Thrones.Space cowboy sim Rebel Galaxy Outlaw recently arrived on Steam after ending its period of Epic exclusivity, and first-person hooter Falcon Age will be joining it on October 6.

It's two minutes of scene setting: from their icy windblown home, the game's starring Vikings plot their invasion of the lush English land across the sea. The trailer demonstrates a handful of ways this will be achieved: by burning down grandiose old buildings. By sneaking stealthily across rooftops. By plunging one's blade into the neck of unaware enemies. By sailing to England (that comes first, I guess). You know, all the usual Assassin's Creed things. It is very impressive though, and I for one am very enthusiastic about having the British Isles to explore later this year. The Assassin's Creed Valhalla release date is November 10. Wes played a chunk of the game earlier this year, confirming that there are violent nuns in the game.

Asus has announced that it's about to release a second round of B450 motherboards, a collection it is calling B450 II series motherboards. A somewhat surprising move given that we've had X570 and B550 motherboards launch since the first wave touched our systems. This older chipset lacks the PCIe 4.0 goodness that you'll find on those newer motherboards, but they are much cheaper, and that has led to many a B450 motherboard making its way into more budget-conscious builds. Lots of builds. In fact enough builds for Asus to revisit this older chipset and update it with a few choice extras. This interesting turn of events all originated with AMD announcing that the X470/B450 platforms wouldn't support the newer Zen 3 CPUs, which are set to be announced on October 8th. There was a bit of an outcry about this, which forced AMD to change its mind and announce that those older platforms would indeed be supported after all. In order to update the BIOS on such motherboards for the new chips though, you will need an older CPU and a new one. Something that obviously not everyone has. One of the features that Asus's second wave of motherboards addresses is support for BIOS updates without requiring a CPU, a technology it calls BIOS Flashback. This enables you to flash the BIOS using a FAT-32 formatted USB stick without CPU or RAM in the motherboard, which is a neat trick. The motherboards also support improved cooling, with new alloy chokes to make for more efficient power conversion, and high quality thermal pads on the VRMs to help transfer heat away. The new range of motherboards also boast Fan Xpert 4 to offer improved control over your systems fans, water pumps and all-in-one coolers. There's also support for an Extreme Quiet mode, which reduces fan speeds to keep your build whisper quiet (primarily for when you're performing light work).

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          310

Chief among them is the elimination of a bug that can cause games to intermittently stutter when playing on a Radeon RX 5000 series card.It is the first bug fix mentioned in a list that spans a baker's dozen issues. Two others are specifically tailored to RX 5000 series owners, including fixing blocky corruption in Detroit: Become Human, and getting rid of artefacts and corruption when playing Doom VFR.Here is the full list, as outlined in the release notes:

Spotted on the Lenovo site (via Kitguru), the tech looks to be similar to that within the wealth of folding phones out there today, except it´s actually a fully functioning PC.“It doesn't get more revolutionary than this,” boasts Lenovo (we´ll see about that). The ThinkPad X1 Fold comes packed with an Intel Core i5 hybrid processor and 8GB of LPDDR4X 4,267MHz RAM across each model, and up to 1TB PCIe SSD storage. Lenovo also claims over 10 hour battery life for video playback on the 50Wh battery, and a weight of just 2.2 lbs.

So, on paper, Nvidia's new GeForce RTX 3000 series should be a perfect match, as both devices support HDMI 2.1 and all its nifty tricks. In practice, however, there have been some annoying bugs, but the good news is a firmware fix is on the way.

This time around players will face off against the undead in the early 1980s, but the story will be firmly rooted in the original Zombies mode of the past."With Black Ops – Cold War, we're starting fresh, embarking on a completely different story in our universe," lead writer Craig Houston says in the video. "It was our opportunity to elevate the entire Zombies experience."The story, Die Maschine—The Machine—begins at a boarded-up bunker, which players will enter as part of a CIA-backed international response team called Requiem, in order to investigate mysterious events and anomalies happening around the world. The team will eventually come into contact, and conflict, with a rival Soviet squad known as Omega Group, which is digging into the same thing. Other characters, with agendas of their own, will also appear throughout the game, while trackable intel will give players an opportunity to go even deeper into the story.Cold War's Zombies mode will support cross-platform play, a first for the series, and Zombies mode play will also count toward battle pass progression. All weapons will also have a rarity value—the higher the rather, the greater the damage output and the more attachments it will support, making any weapon sustainable through later rounds. Field upgrades and equipment will enable new layers of tactics, and there will be no limit on the number of perks you can consume. Instead of fighting to the death as in previous Zombies modes, Cold War players will have the option of calling for an extraction when things get out of hand. The catch is that things will get even more out of hand at that point—"zombie spawns will be dialed up to 11," Activision said—but the upside is that players who can make it out alive will earn special rewards for doing so. Significantly, post-launch maps will be free: "As new maps come out, everyone is going to be able to come along for the journey as we take them through this storyline," Treyarch communications director John Rafacz said.More information about Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War's new Zombies will be revealed as the game comes closer to launch, which will happen on November 13. Ahead of that, a multiplayer beta test will come to PC beginning on October 15.

Winning isn't all that easy, though, and in Season 1, Fall Guys only gave players a total of three Crowns for progressing through the entire season's worth of rewards.Since many Fall Guys featured costumes cost a lot of Crowns—often the top part and the bottom part each cost 5 Crowns apiece—a lot of players simply can't afford to buy those costumes (or can only buy half). But Fall Guys Season 2, which begins next week, will be different. Instead of just 3 Crowns given as progress rewards in Season 1, Fall Guys Season 2 will let players earn 18 more Crowns, so 21 in total, even if they never win. It'll still take a while to unlock all those Crowns, but at least it will be possible for players to afford a couple of the pricey featured costumes without having to win a single match.

In a filing made the following day, Epic and Apple were actually able to find common ground on something: They'd prefer not to bring a jury into it."During the September 28, 2020, hearing on Epic´s Motion for a Preliminary Injunction, the Court indicated that it '[did not] want to try two cases' and was 'inclined to try both cases at once,' and asked the parties to inform the Court by 5:00 PM PT on September 29, 2020, whether either party demands a jury trial," the filing states."Epic and Apple have met and conferred, and the parties agree that Epic´s claims and Apple´s counterclaims should be tried by the Court, and not by a jury. Therefore, with Epic´s consent, Apple hereby withdraws its demand for a jury trial pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 38(d). The parties respectfully request that the case (including any claims and counterclaims) proceed to a bench trial on a schedule determined by the Court."The comment about "two cases" is a reminder that there actually two separate actions going on here: Epic's lawsuit against Apple over "monopolistic practices" on the App Store, and Apple's breach of contract countersuit against Epic. Apple had initially demanded a trial by jury in its lawsuit.A bench trial is one in which a judge, rather than a jury, hears the case and delivers a finding. The American Bar Association says that despite what you may have seen on television, bench trials are actually more common in civil matters than jury trials. In theory, a judge should be better equipped to follow complex legal arguments than a jury.A trial date has not yet been set, but the judge in the case said yesterday that it likely won't take place until July 2021.

And as of right now, the G502 has dropped to its lowest price yet: $119.99. That's $30 off the usual cost. This is a wireless version of Logitech's G502 gaming mouse, which is still a popular option at its usual price of $50. This upgraded model uses Logitech's proprietary 'Lightspeed' wireless technology, which transmits data with only a 1ms delay—indistinguishable from a USB connection. The other reason for the price jump from the regular G502 is Powerplay support, so if you have Logitech's $120 Powerplay mouse pad, the mouse is kept fully charged through the pad. You can of course also opt to charge the mouse every once in a while over USB, should you prefer ye olden times. The Logitech G502 Lightspeed is equipped with a 16K DPI sensor for high accuracy, 11 customizable buttons (including the main left/right buttons), RGB lighting, and textured rubber grips on the sides. There are also weights you can take in and out of the frame, so no matter if you like a heavy or lightweight mouse, the G502 should fit the bill.

Indie development studio The Wandering Band has announced that it will be out on December 17, exclusive to the Epic Games Store.Samuel Horti played a demo of Airborne Kingdom last year, and said, "The aerial theme is more than just a gimmick. Every house, plane hangar, farm, and propeller has weight, and if you put too many buildings on one side of your city it can tip over. If it's leaning then you'll fly slower, and buildings will degrade faster. Just glancing at your city will tell you if it's balanced, and I like how your whole airship wobbles and settles as you plop down new houses."That tilt-shifted toybox diorama look is quite attractive, and as someone who commands the settler to plonk down somewhere in Civilization, then regrets it for the next 100 turns, the idea of being able to move my cloud city around is pretty appealing.

Obsidian's suburban survival game Grounded has a new answer for that conundrum: ziplines. As of today, the game's 0.3.0 update adds these endlessly helpful (and fun) traversal tools to the game. You'll find them in the newly revamped Hedge area of the map, but it's also possible to craft them yourself. As for the Hedge revamp, there's now a hidden lab there which can be reached using ziplines. The hallways in this lab are "not-so-abandoned", which is probably code for: there are giant bugs in it that will kill you.In order to craft ziplines you'll need the new Spinning Wheel. In the update blog, it's hinted that you're probably going to need spider web to craft these ziplines, so uh, good luck with that. Also keep an eye out for new signs, a new landmark in the form of the Frankenline, as well as Halloween stuff like a Jack-o-Lantern landmark and a new Candy Corn food item. The full changelog is here, and the tweaks and fixes are numerous, or you could watch the devblog video below:

It adds AI adventurers who can fill any gaps in your party, so that Blightbound can be played by a duo or even a solo player. Also new in this update is a pirate hero named Seirinne, with an ability called Shadow Statue that lets her stall enemies and deal damage to them over time.New elite enemies in the Helping Hands update have the on-brand names Gravesteel, Assailant Gijs, and Bloodmaster Krux, and a change has been made to their drops. Elite enemies no longer reward players with the crafting resource Aetheri Crystals—now they come from bounties taken from the bounty board, which will apparently make earning them more predictable. Seven new items and their crafting recipes have also been added, as well as localizations for French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.Blightbound is currently in Early Access on Steam, and developer Ronimo Games (also responsible for Awesomenauts) estimate that it'll reach 1.0 next year. Here are the full patch notes for the Helping Hands update.

Speedrunner d_tea isn't taking any crap from burrowing moles or barreling lizards though, because they've managed to beat the game in under three minutes. As in the first game, the teleporter shears most of the seconds off this 2:53 any% run. D_tea finds one in the second Dwelling level, which is the earliest possible way to find it. As you'd expect, the rest of the run proceeds in a blur: d_tea teleports to each exit without taking in the sights, except for a brief stop to rob a jetpack, which comes in handy in the ice caves.D_tea was also responsible for one of the first truly impressive Spelunky 2 speedruns, which popped up just after the PS4 version released. There's definitely room for improvement in this current run, which isn't to say it's not hugely impressive. But if the speedrun community for the first game is any indication, this record will be beaten before too long.If you're just getting into the game, we've got some Spelunky 2 beginner's tips to help you find your footing. Cheers, Kotaku.

Our reviewer Robert Zak described his time in Kenshi by saying, "I've crossed swamps so vast that I haven't dared return. I've been beaten shitless by a pack of goats that were intended to feed my rabble of listless nomads. I've been a shopkeeper and a thief, a lone wanderer and a slave, and I've been an entire community of people working together to—one day—erect our own city in the wasteland. One day."The community update also mentions that "Proceeds gained from Kenshi are now invested in developing Kenshi 2, with the expanded team of 15 and a new office in Bristol." Kenshi 2 was announced last year. We don't know much about it yet, except that it will be set 1,000 years earlier, and feature some new creatures like the one below.

There's a reboot of the movies, being directed by Johannes Roberts. There's a live-action Netflix series about "the Wesker kids" moving to "New Raccoon City". And now there's Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, a CGI series also coming to Netflix, but one that seems to be hewing a little closer to the canon of the series. As the teaser shows, it features Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, a spooky old house, and zombies. It looks much more in line with Capcom's three CG movies starring Leon (RE: Degeneration, RE: Damnation, and RE: Vendetta), and shares their producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi.Infinite Darkness will run for eight one-hour episodes, and is coming to Netflix in 2021. Meanwhile, the next Resident Evil videogame is in the works as well. Here's everything we know about Resident Evil Village.

Now a trio of images have appeared on image-hosting site Imgur, claiming to be leaked from Starfield. One's an in-game shot of an astronaut who appears to be standing on a space station, another shows a close-up of a UI element from the first screenshot, and the third is a spaceship with some scorch marks and wear and tear.

The trick is to keep those administrators at bay until a product is truly ready for prime time. Bethesda has been producing commercial software for a very long time. I have to believe Microsoft execs will be responsive to Bethesda's input."Weaver describes the relationship between Bethesda and Microsoft around the time of Morrowind's Xbox release as "excellent", saying that "I was close to key members of the original Xbox development team and shared many thoughts for what their "next-gen" console could bring to gaming." He describes Microsoft's purchase of Bungie and other studios as "prescient".On the subject of whether he believes Bethesda's future games will eventually become console-exclusive to Xbox, Weaver said, "I do not think it is any accident that this announcement occurred so close to Sony´s PS5 announcement. There are only a limited number of proven creators of AAA. The card will supposedly have a 256-bit memory bus, offering 448GB/s of memory bandwidth. It's also said that such a card would be timed to arrive around the same time as AMD's Big Navi announcement. Game on.Nvidia's Ampere launch has been a hot topic these past few weeks, as its GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 graphics cards have both sold out immediately on its website and by way of its retail partners. And on October 15, we're guessing the same thing is likely to happen with the GeForce RTX 3070.Two weeks after that, on October 28, AMD will formally introduce its Radeon RX 6000 series, based on its RDNA 2 architecture, the same as what underpins the custom GPUs inside the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. An AMD exec has already suggested it will not be a paper launch, either. You can bet Nvidia has a strategy to contend with AMD's launch, should the RX 6000 series bring performance parity to its Ampere cards at competitive price points. As it potentially applies to that, the folks at Videocardz say they have 'confirmed' from two sources that the next entry to the GeForce RTX 30 series is the 3060 Ti, before even the inevitable non-Ti variant. Here's where such a card would would fit into the existing hierarchy:

The ESIC (Esports Integrity Commission) announced that matches from official ESL and DreamHack tournaments were analysed. Initially this resulted in bans for three coaches: MIBR's Ricardo "dead" Sinigaglia, Heroic's Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen, and Hard Legion's Aleksandr "MechanoGun" Bogatiryev. The ESIC has now announced that it's issued sanctions against 37 coaches for using the glitch. So far, the commission has checked roughly 20 percent of the total demos available for review. However, they claim that the demos they've reviewed so far "likely comprise the most substantial cases of abuse". Each offender has been assigned 'demerit points' that correspond to a specific sanction tier, which then outlines the duration of the ban. This standardises the sanctions to ensure that each person receives a fair penalty. Here are the sanctioning tiers and ban periods:

The company has created three new quirky creatures that are in the running, but the ultimate choice of which one will be let loose is up to the fans.Players will be able to cast their vote during Minecraft Live's livestream event taking place this weekend on October 3. As the livestream is on, there will be a voting poll over on Minecraft's official twitter account where you'll be able to cast your vote. These voting polls are becoming pretty common for Mojang. Players were able to vote on a new biome at last year's Minecraft Live, and fans also voted on the new undead Phantom mob during Minecon Earth in 2017. Thankfully, there are no creepy, undead mobs in this newest poll, and the curious creatures that are up for deliberation this time are the Iceologer, Moobloom, and Glow Squid.Iceologer: The new Illager type is a hostile mob called the Iceologer that will reside in Minecraft's snowy mountain biomes. If you discover one of their patrols and get too close, they hurl flying ice clouds at you. It's as if Mojang didn't think mountain terrains were difficult enough.Moobloom: Now this is my type of mob. The Moobloom is described as a "gentle creature" that has yellow flowers growing out of its back. They seem to be similar to the average Minecraft cow but can also interact with bees, which is super cute. Glow Squid: The Glow Squid is a chill mob that may look a little scary but won't attack you. Mojang says that it looks best in areas with dark bodies of water because of its luminescent skin, so get your diving gear on for some spectacular sights. Mojang will be releasing informational videos about each mob type over the course of the week. There are also discussions and full-blown campaign posters over on the Minecraft subreddit, so check that out of you want some help deciding.

Known as version 18.4 to its friends, the update brings the start of the Masquerade Ball limited-time event, the return of Dual-Class Arena, and a new Hearthstone Book of Heroes featuring Rexxar. It also adds elementals as a new Battlegrounds minion type while simultaneously resetting everyone's Battlegrounds rank (more on that in a moment), and delivers a couple of balance updates aimed at Standard. Phew. Let's get into it.The nerfs being made are to Guardian Animals and Tortollan Pilgrim. The latter was essential to Turtle Mage, one of the most annoying Hearthstone decks of all time.As of 18.4, Tortollan Pilgrim's Battlecry will no longer Discover and play a copy of spell from your deck, instead it will consume the spell you pick. This should prevent the use of Tortollan Pilgrim to draw a copy of Potion of Illusion so you can use it to copy Tortollan Pilgrim and set up the tedious loop that was Turtle Mage's whole thing. That change should effectively kill the deck's win condition, although better brains than ours might find a way to salvage it somehow. The other nerf is to Guardian Animals, a 7-mana Druid spell that summoned two Beasts that cost five Mana or lower then gave them Rush, which has been particularly obnoxious when used in combination with Lake Thresher, Twilight Runner, and Teacher's Pet. Thanks to Druid's glut of ramp cards like Wild Growth, Innervate, Overgrowth, and Breath of Dreams, hitting seven Mana is a piece of cake. Blizzard presumably either had a choice between changing multiple ramp cards or hitting Guardian Animals, and opted for the simpler option. Whether a single point of Mana will be enough to defang the deck remains to be seen, but small cost changes can often have a major effect because they push power spikes back by a whole turn. Both Guardian Animals and Tortollan Pilgrim will be eligible for full dust refunds for two weeks after the patch goes live.

Despite those mobile game roots it has a huge open world, a fully voice-acted story, and the combat is pretty fun, too. It released just today on PC, mobile, and PS4 (with cross-save support between PC and mobile), but if you're trying to download it you might be running into some dismal download speeds.Fortunately, there's a simple fix: try pausing the download via the launcher and resuming it. You won't lose any progress, but a lot of players are reporting that it significantly improved their speed—and it worked for me and another editor, too. I was stuck looking at a 10-hour download going at a miserable 0.3MB/s, but after pausing and resuming the download a few times I was able to get up to 1.7MB/s. That's still awful, but it shaved my download down to just two hours, which is much more tolerable. If that doesn't work, you can also try exiting the launcher entirely and restarting it. Again, you won't lose any download progress, but there's a good chance you'll see slightly improved speeds. If you don't, keep trying to pause or exit the download a few more times. It seems completely random: Sometimes the download would be much worse, other times it'd pick up speed. Either way, Genshin Impact is only a 15GB download, so it won't take too long if you manage to get it higher than 1MB/s.What's unclear, however, is what is causing such slow downloads in the first place. Genshin Impact is developed by MiHoYo, which is based in Shanghai. If the servers are also located there, that could explain it. Though the game feels like it came out of the blue, it's also possible that there's just too many people trying to download it right now and the servers are at capacity. Either way, give the above advice a shot and see if it helps. We'll update this story if we find more tips.
